The town was founded in the 14th-century around the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergio, one of the finest examples of Russian architecture of the 14th-C. Today, it functions as the heart of the Russian Orthodox Church and is sometimes known as the “Russian Vatican.” The interiors of the white stone Trinity Cathedral are decorated with the icons painted by the old masters. The Museum of Applied Art offers displays of ancient embroidery, gold and silver tableware, furniture and tapestries. The city is also home to the Pilgrimage Center.
